vit-menshostel Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College by Mr. G. Viswanathan, former Member of Parliament and Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu, it was promoted by the North Arcot Educational and Charitable Trust, Vellore. It was affiliated to the University of Madras until 2000. In 2001, the institute was awarded the deemed university status by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India and hence the name was changed to Vellore Institute of Technology. In September 2006, it was renamed as VIT University in accordance with new decree issued by the University Grants Commission enabling deemed universities to change their name to "university".

VIT University has been conferred with an "A" grade by NAAC. Some of its technical courses have been accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK. In an India Today survey it was ranked the 10th best engineering college in India.

Facilities:

VIT campus spread across a vast area of 250 acres. A striking feature of VIT is the well-planned and comprehensive infrastructure provided for both students and faculty. The latest technologies are provided in the computing centers with 55 servers and over 1000 computers. Modern laboratories enable students and researchers to keep abreast of emerging trends and applications. VIT’s Library is an unique feature of the campus and is housed in a 25,000 sq.ft. centrally air conditioned building. It has over 40,000 books, 4,400 back volumes of scientific and technical periodicals and extensive non-print learning resources. The library also subscribes to 300 specialized journals, both Indian and foreign.

Programs:

The university offers 18 undergraduate and 32 postgraduate programs (including a 5-year integrated MS-Software Engineering program). It also offers research programs leading to M.Phil., M.S. (by research) and Ph.D. degrees. The programs are accredited by national agencies such as NBA (AICTE), NAAC (UGC) and Institution of Engineers (India).
