The institute was founded by Ghanshyam Das Birla in 1929 as an intermediate college. In 1946, it was converted into the Birla Engineering College with degree programmes in electrical and mechanical engineering. Masters programme in Electronics began in 1955. The Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani is an all-India Institute for higher education. Birla Institute of Technology & Science, (known as BITS Pilani) is an Institution declared as Deemed to be University under Sec. 3 of the UGC Act and features in the world map as a renowned science and technology institute. It is located in Pilani, Rajasthan, India.

In 1964, the Birla Colleges of Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Pharmacy and Science were merged to form the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) with Dr. G.D.Birla as the founder chairman. The Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani offers degree programmes in Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Pharmacy, Management and Humanities. Programs:

1. Integrated First Degree Programs:

B.E.(Hons), B.Pharm.(Hons.), M.Sc.(Hons.), M.Sc.(Tech.) Degrees... (For admission to any of the above Integrated First Degree programmes Candidates should have passed the 12^th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Further the candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects in 12^th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects and should have adequate proficiency in English.)

2. Higher Degree Programs:

Admissions to M.E. and M.Pharm. Degrees... (A Minimum aggregate of 60% in the qualifying degree examination for All Programmes.)

3. Master of Business Administration:

Admissions to MBA Degrees... (Any Integrated first degree of BITS or B.E./B.Tech in Engineering disciplines from other recognized universities with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.)

4. Admissions to Master of Public Health (MPH):

( Two years programs, Any integrated First Degree of BITS or its equivalent; M.B.B.S., B.D.S, M.Sc. (Nursing) or their equivalent.)

5. Doctoral Programs:

BITS, Pilani offers Doctoral programmes in various disciplines of Engineering, Sciences, Technology, Pharmacy, Management and Humanities.

Admissions to Ph.D. programs... (Any Higher Degree of BITS or its equivalent with a minimum of 60% aggregate in the qualifying examination.)
