About University of Delhi

University of Delhi

The University of Delhi (DU) is a central university situated in Delhi, India and is funded by Government of India. Established in 1922, it offers courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. Vice-President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari is the Chancellor of the university.

Only three colleges existed then in Delhi: St. Stephens College founded in 1881, Hindu College founded in 1899 and Ramjas College founded in 1917, which were affiliated to the University. The University thus had a modest beginning with just three colleges, two faculties (Arts and Science) and about 750 students. In October 1933, the University offices and the Library shifted to the Viceregal Lodge Estate, and till today this site is the nucleus of the University (Main Campus).

Apart from central administrative offices, examination offices and the sports complex, the main departments of the Faculty of Science are housed in the Viceregal Lodge Estate. Sir Maurice Gwyer, who was the then Vice Chancellor, realizing the importance of a distinguished faculty, searched for talent all over the country and brought men of eminence to this University, such as Prof. D S Kothari in Physics, Prof. T R Sheshadri in Chemistry, Prof. P Maheshwari in Botany and Prof. M L Bhatia in Zoology. Over the last seven decades the University has grown into one of the largest universities in India. At present, there are 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges spread all over the city, with about 220,000 students.

The University offers a colossal 447 different courses in fields like Commerce, Sciences, Arts, International Languages, Engineering etc at the undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, Ph.D., diploma and certificate levels.

At present, there are 13 faculties, 76 departments and 8 centres of learning operating in the University.

The colleges affiliated to DU are spread all over the city divided under the north, south, east, west and central regions.

The nucleus of the Delhi University is its North Campus which is home to colleges like the Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), St. Stephen’s College, Hindu College and several other reputed colleges.

The university is also trying to develop its East and West campuses. The East Campus is being developed with the University College of Medical Sciences as its nucleus and the west campus will focus on Engineering & Technology courses.

Eligibility for Undergraduate programs:

Evidence of required academic performance must be in the form of certified English transcripts listing all the courses with the grades or marks earned. Transcripts in languages other than English are not acceptable. Applicants for any of the Under-Graduate Course must have completed the 12 years of formal schooling. Applicants who have passed final School Certificate Examination of twelve year duration are advised to apply preferably by 31st March each year foradmission in July that year. However, applications are accepted up to 30th April.

The minimum admission requirement in terms of the percentage of marks that are required by a candidate for being admitted to a course varies in many cases from year to year. The number of seats in the Science Courses is extremely limited. In view of the large number of highly qualified applicants, only those students who have secured approximately 65 percent marks in aggregate have a chance of securing admission. Applicants for courses in the Arts and Social Sciences are expected to have secured around 60 percent marks in the final school examination

Eligibility for Admission to Post-Graduate Courses:

For admission to a post-graduate programme of studies in any discipline, one must have completed 12 years of formal education at the School level followed by a Bachelor’s Degree of at least 3 years duration. However, the admission to post-graduate courses is rather restricted and the applicant should have an excellent academic record to stand a fair chance for admission.

Eligibility for admission to M.Phil and Ph.D Courses:

University of Delhi also offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. Courses in all the Departments/Faculties. The minimum admission requirement for the research degree (Ph.D) is a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree of Indian University or any other degree recognized as equivalent to it. In very exceptional cases a University teacher having adequate teaching experience with good Master’s degree may be admitted directly to Ph.D course. The admission for these courses is very limited and is decided by the respective Departments/Faculties on the basis of a very sound academic record along with a detailed research proposal.

Age Requirements:

No candidate is qualified for admission to theUniversity in the first year of the degree course unless he/she is seventeen years of age before the first day of October in the year in which he/she seeks admission. Likewise for M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., LL.B. and B.Ed.

Courses the applicant must be 20 years of age before the first day of October in the year in which admission is being sought.

No foreign student will be admitted to this University or any other University without a Student’s Visa. Such Student’s Visa will be extended by the Ministry of Home Affairs after ascertaining that student pursuing his/her studies, is receiving remittance through proper banking channels.
