Many young persons in the urban area are also moving out for their parents’ places to seek opening in other parts of the country or even outside India. Girls are sexually harassed sometimes by their fellow students, or teachers, or by strangers as they walk down to school. These pressures are central to low enrolment and retention of girls. There is no electricity at Kabir Chabutra. Cloud of fireflies descend on the garden of the rest house, blinking coded messages to each other. The forest awakens to the night. Insects chitters. A Cheetal barks shrilly. Far away a Sambar yells, certain indication that it has sighted a big cat. Much later that night I wake to the faint sawing of a leopard. Till just a few years ago panthers were regular visitors of the rest house garbage. Ten years ago it was not uncommon to see a tiger even in the farm. But tree felling pushed the prey species away and the great cats followed. Deforestation has also affected the climate. Temperature have gone up and more rain now falls on fewer days. Naturally, less water is absorbed and more runs off. A small dam is constructed in Narmada a short distance from the source tank, creating a small lake that ripples gently in the sun. People who have worshipped at the tank happily pedal boats here, dropping empty packets of Pan Masala into the water. Below it the stream meanders across the plateau, leaping and spalshing and gurgling.

But you have just read Maeterlinck’s life of the Bee, of the White Ants and the Ants, and you must have wondered at the social organization of these insects. We look down upon the insects as almost the lowest of living things, and yet these tiny things have learnt the art of co-operation and of sacrifice for the common good far better than men. Ever since I read of the White Ants and of its sacrifices for its comrades, I have developed a soft corner in my heart for it.
