Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below : When Ross began his research it was not even certainthat mosquitoes had anything to do with malaria, no one knew whether it was transmitted through mosquito bites or by the drinking of water containing infected larvae of mosquitoes. Manson inclined to the latter theory and at first Ross followed him. But Ross accumulated various facts which seemed to be against it. He noticed that though Secunderabad was surrounded by marshes, there was little malaria. He thought that this might be due to the wind, for Secunderabad was a windy place and it was known that mosquitoes did not thrive in windy weather.

These and other observations turned him away from Manson’s drinking water theory and directed his attention more to transmission by the flying and biting

mosquito. He concentrated on trying to discover whether this mode of transmission is indeed, the one which actually occurs.

Pointing to it, he asked the waiter, “ Could you tell me the name of that bird.” “It is a cock.” “What is the cock’s wife called ?” he asked, “She is called a hen,” said the waiter. “What do you call the hen’s children ?” “They are chickens.” “What are the chickens called before they are born ?”, he asked. “They are called eggs.” “Fine ! said the man, “will you bring me two eggs with coffee and some toast ? They can solve the most complex mathematical problems or put thousands of unrelated facts in order. These machines can be put to various uses. For instance, they can provide information on the best way to prevent traffic accidents, or they can count number of times the word ‘and’ has been used in the Bible. Because they work accurately and at high speeds, they save research worker’s years of hard work. This whole process by which machines can be used to work for us has been called ‘automation’. In the future, automation may enable human-beings for more leisure than they do today. The coming of automation is bound to have important social consequences. 5 18. 11. A great book gives us intellectual food. We want to read it again and again. Whenever we read it, either first time

or second or third time, we find new meanings and new beauties. A great book is praised and admired in all ages and it passes the test of time. It delights the reader more and more again and again as he grows in age. A great book grows exactly in proportion to the growth of the reader’s mind.

or One day a thief entered Pavaharibaba’s hut and took away the vessel containing food. When the saint saw the running

thief, he picked up the other two vessels containing boiled vegetables and curd to the thief to eat without any hurry.

The affectionate words of the saint surprised the thief and he prostrated himself before the saint. The saint’s purity at

heart completely changed the thief’s life.

12. (i) The narrator reviewed his life’s errors and took a book of short stories and read one.

13. Babuli’s elder brother had asked him to come home because there was some feud in the family. The two

sisters-in-law had quarrelled. The paddy fields, the cottage and all the movable and inmovable property were to be divided. Babuli’s second brother was particular and adamant about the division of property.

or The villagers went to the village temple to offer special midnight prayers to appease god. There was a severe drought in the village. Although the rainfall was sufficient, yet all the sources of water had dried up. For the villagers it was an indication of god’s anger. A few villagers had already nigrated to the cities in search of jobs and believed that the village was cursed.

14. (i) Thanappa, the postman was most intimate withRamanujan, of 10-Vinayak Mudali Street, Senior clerk. He had brought letters to this address for over a generation now.

(ii) The writer’s grand mother always went to school with him because the school was attached to the temple.

(iii) When the school teachers tried to close the path, the village priest called on the Headmaster and argued with him to reopen it, so that they may have nothing to quarrel about.

(iv) Rakesh was upset to see that a goat had entered the garden and had eaten all the leaves of the cherry tree.

Only the main stem and two thin branches were left.

(v) Della made her small hair curly. She prepared coffee and the frying-pan was hot and ready to cook the chops. Della doubled the fob chain in her hand and sat to wait for Jim.

(vi) The princess’s parents were sad because right from her childhood she used to whistle. She was asked many a time to give up this habit but as she grew and became a woman, she whistled beautifully.

21. (i) Reference - These are the opening lines of Shakespeare’s poem, “ The Seven Ages of Man.”

Context - These lines are spoken by Jaques in the play “As You Like It.”

Explanation - Man’s life is a drama and the world is a stage, where men and women simply come and after doing their assigned roles. Just as actors on the stage enter and leave the stage, Similarly, men are born and they die in this world. Each and everyman plays many roles in the drama of life on the big stage of this world.

or Reference - These lines have been taken from the poem “The Noble Nature” by Ben Jonson.

Context - The poet tells us that a beautiful a short meaningful, active life is better than a long, meaningless dull life. The beauty of life lies in noble nature. The noble and beautiful sweet behavior of a man makes him really great and perfect.

(ii) Reference - This stanza has been taken from the poem, “A Boy’s Song” by Wilfrid Wilson Gibson.

Context - The poet feels a great joy in seeing the birds flying freely in the open and vast sky. He feels that all the

birds belong to him.

Explanation - The poet says that he loves the flying birds and feels flying with them. He soars higher and higher in the vast sky riding on the eagle’s wings. In his imagination he listens the blue-tit singing all day. Thus the poet feels a child like affection for the birds and feels great pleasure in their activities.

or Reference - This stanza has been taken from the poem “The Snare” by James Stephens.

Context - The poem shows pity for animals. A rabbit is trapped and is in distress. It cries for help and its cries upsets

the sensitive poet, who wanders from place to place to help the rabbit.

Explanation - The poet hears a sudden cry of a rabbit, trapped in a snare. The poet feels pity for the trapped rabbit’s cries but is not sure about the place from where it is coming. The rabbit’s cries echo in the air and the whole atmosphere is filled with fear.

22. (i) Ode - Ode is a lyric poem expressing exalted or enthusiastic emotion. It is an elaborate lyric, expressed in a language that is imaginative, dignified and sincere. Romantic poets have used “Ode” to describe any poem of moderate length which seriously and lyrically celebrates a subject.

(ii) Biography - Biography deals with the history of the life of a particular person written by someone else. The person described in a Biography has a peculiar personality with his remarkable experiences, struggles, aspirations, achievements etc. The aim of a Biography is to inculcate certain values in the readers. The aim is to pinpoint the merits and faults of the character so that readers can have a balanced opinion about his personality.

(iii) Pun - The pun is associated with a play on words based on the similarity of sound between two words with different

meanings. If the pun is used only as a mere play on words, it reduces itself merely to a joke, e.g. “He took hundred eggs

and one” (won)

(iv) Irony - The word “irony” is derived from the Greek word “eiron”, used to describe the deceiving nature of a character in a drama. As a literary device it refers to a statement that means just opposite of what is really expressed in words, “Socratic” irony and Dramatic irony are well known.
