The best part of every men’s education is that which he gives to himself. The education received at school or college is but a beginning, and is valuable chiefly because it trains the mind and makes at accustomed to continuous application and study. That which is put into us by others is always far less than that which we acquire by our own efforts. Knowledge conquered by labour becomes a possession – a property entirely our own. Our own active effort is the essential thing: and no facilities, no teachers, no amount of lesson learnt by rote will enable us to so without it.

Questions:

         1. Why is education valuable?

         2. When does knowledge become our property?

         3. Give a suitable heading to the passage.

         4. Explain the italicized portions.

         5. Which education is more useful?
