Guru Nanak strongly rejected the caste system. He instituted the Guru ha langar, or Guru's kitchen, where his followers would all eat together in order to break down the barriers of caste. For all the differences between Nanak and brahminical teaching. Hindus have always regarded the Sikhs as part and parcel of Hinduism. They believe that anyone horn a Hindu remains a Hindu throughout all his lives. no matter what doctrines he may profess. This is one reason why Sikhs have always striven so hard to establish their separate identity and feared that their religion might he reabsorbed by Hinduism.

Guru Nanak travelled widely, visiting Hindu and Muslim holy places, but he was himself a Punjabi: he wrote in Punjab] and it was in the Punjab that his teachings took root. Within forty years of his death Nanak's followers had grown into a body of believers recognized by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. With a grant of land donated by the Emperor, the Sikhs set

;shout building a shrine, around which grew their holy cite of Amritsar. Amritsar means 'pool of nectar' and refers to the sacred pool, or sarowar, excavated by the fourth Guru. The Golden Temple itself, the Hari Mandir or Temple of God, was built in the middle of the sarowar by the fifth Guru, Arjun. Although 'Hari' is a name of the Hindu god Vishnu, the Hari

Mandir was, and still is, very different from a Hindu temple. The foundation stone was laid by a Muslim mystic, the Sufi Mian Pir of Lahore. The temple had four doorways instead of the usual one, to indicate that it was open to all the four main caste divisions of Hindu society. Devotees had to step downwards to enter the temple. to remind them of the humility necessary to come close to God.

Guru Arjun realized the necessity of providing an authorized version of the scriptures to enshrine Guru Nanak's teaching. He it was who compiled the holy book of the Sikhs, the 'Adi Granth', or first book, which later became known as the Guru Granth Sahib, and installed it within the Golden Temple.
