Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology (DDIT) was founded in 1968 by Dharmsinh Dadubhai Desai, who then was a Member of Parliament, as an institution of higher learning in the field of Engineering and Technology. It achieved an 'Autonomous' status under Gujarat University in 1991 . It received a Deemed University status in June 2000. In April 2005, Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology achieved full University status and was renamed as Dharmsinh Desai University (DDU). Under the flagship name of DDU, the university has also started a bachelor's course in Dental Surgery from 2005.

DDIT is now a State University under the name of Dharmsinh Desai University with effect from 12th April 2005 vide the Dharmsinh Desai Act, 2005 through a notification no. GH/SH/3/APB-2003-1610-S dated 11 April 2005 published by the Department of Education, Government of Gujarat.

Besides formal education, the University also conducts the continuing education programmes not simply for the professionals but also for the under-privileged sections of society. Every year a month long programme on Computer Awareness is conducted for rural women of this region. It is appreciable that the University organises the blood donation camp in every semester, & the highest numbers of blood bottles are contributed by our students to the Red Cross Society in the region.

The R&D centre of the University has developed a Portrait Building System which is successfully used at every District Police Head Quarters in the Country to arrest criminals. It was first field tested in Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case by National Crime Record Bureau. Currently also a centre for research in Nano Sciences & Surface Engineering is established.
