The food processing sector though in nascent stage has acquired a priority status in our economy. With the enactment of the Food Safety and Standards Bill 2005, the Food Processing Industry is anticipated to grow @ 8% per annum by the end of 2007. The growth rate should be 10 % by 2010. We believe that the targets set under the Technology Mission in Horticulture and Food Processing Industries shall create good demand for a technically skilled manpower and entrepreneurs.

In this Diploma Programme in Value Added Products from Fruits and Vegetables, we aim to develop competent human resources in the field of post harvest management of fruits and vegetables and production of value added products from them. It intends to inculcate vocational and entrepreneurial skills to widen employment opportunities, particularly among rural youth and the disadvantaged sections of the society as well as self employment. It seeks to address the workforce requirements of the food processing industries and focuses on upgrading the knowledge and skills of existing workers. The programme caters to educational requirements of the horticulture farmers, food processors, skilled workers / technicians in the fruit processing industries, NGO functionaries/ trainers, entrepreneurs, staff of Food Processing Training Centre (FPTC) / horticulture/ post harvest/ food processing departments of the states/ central, rural educators, farmers, etc.

Objectives

  • To provide the knowledge & skills for minimizing the post-harvest losses and production of value added food products,
  • To develop human resource for post harvest management and for primary processing of fruits and vegetables produce at the production areas/ clusters,
  • To develop youth as young entrepreneurs for self employment through food processing and associated activities,
  • To impart knowledge and technical proficiency in

– Procurement of raw materials,

– Preparation of value added products,

– Prevention of losses in fresh and processed horticulture produce,

– Marketing and economical aspects,

– Managing small and medium enterprises.

Eligibility Requirements:

· 10+2 pass-outs / Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) from IGNOU

· 10th pass can enroll simultaneously for the BPP and the Diploma programme.

Admission Details:

• Admission notification is generally released in May/June and the date for submission of filled-in application forms will be 1 July to September 30 for January session and 1 January to March 31 for July session.

• However students are requested to check with the official admission notification for the exact dates related to admission.

Duration:

· Minimum - 1 year

· Maximum - 4 years.

· English/Hindi

Programme Structure:

The Diploma Programme consists of the following eight courses, each worth 4 credits:

  • Food Fundamentals
  • Principles of Post Harvest Management
  • Food Chemistry and Physiology
  • Food Processing and Engineering – I
  • Food Microbiology
  • Food Processing and Engineering – II
  • Food Quality Testing and Evaluation
  • Entrepreneurship and Marketing

Video Programmes: The self learning instructional material shall be supported with the video programmes.
