NEW DELHI: Concerned over the recent incidents of molestation, harassment and attacks on the northeastern students in the Capital, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has decided to convene a high-level meeting to take a close look at the problem.

Singh told a delegation of Congress functionaries from the region on Tuesday that his government would take necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of the NE community living in and around Delhi.

The delegation members apprised him of the sense of insecurity gripping the northeastern people either working or pursuing higher studies here. They sought his intervention pointing to the molestation of a young woman from the community in Gurgaon the other day.

Singh told the PMO officials present at the meeting to take necessary steps in view of the developments, according to the delegation members. "The PM assured us of every possible measure to ensure safety and security of the northeastern community in Delhi," Sharif Laskar, a delegation member, later said.

"He is concerned because he also represents the northeast in Parliament," Laskar said pointing out that Singh was a Rajya Sabha member from Assam. Representatives of the northeastern students had earlier met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and discussed the issue of the community's security with Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Dikshit accepted their demand for a toll-free police helpline for the community members. She also agreed to their proposal for the appointment of a few senior officers of Delhi Police from the region to facilitate communication with the distressed students. The delegation members later said that representatives of the home ministry and Delhi government would be present at the meeting being convened by the PM.
