New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday will decide whether Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi can participate in the governing body meeting of St. Stephen's College here to be held on that day.

Earlier on Wednesday, a single-judge bench of thehigh court restrained Quraishi, a principal's appointee in the college's governing body, from participating in the proceedings of the panel.

The court was hearing a civil suit filed by Ajay P. Singha, former member of the governing body, against the decision to appoint Quraishi on the governing body.

However, later in the day Rev Valson Thampu, principal of the college, appealed before the other bench of the high court against the single-judge order. The court will decide the issue on Thursday.

In October, Singha moved the court against Quraishi's appointment, contending that he was removed before his tenure as the governing body member ended, and was replaced by Quraishi. It was also submitted that Singha was appointed against the casual vacancy created by the resignation of Naveen Chawla, the chief electrion commissioner.

However, last month the court allowed Quraishi to attend the governing body meeting and ruled that Singha's petition was not maintainable.
