The Ranchi University is a university in Jharkhand state of India. It was established in 1960. It is headquartered in Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand. Today it has jurisdiction over the districts of Ranchi,  Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega . Right since its inception Ranchi University has been alive to the ever increasing demands of higher education.

The university has a total student intake of around 90,000 students from its affiliated colleges. It has a central library with approximately 150,000 books for the academic needs of the students. There are a total of 2 male hostels and 4 female hostels in the university campus situated at Kutchery Road, Morabadi in Ranchi. The university is financially dependent on UGC funds (Rs. 38crores annually) in addition to the fees paid by the students.

The department of Anthropology in Ranchi University has a museum that showcases variety of exhibits including ethnographic collections of central Indian states, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Central Library:

Ranchi University has a central library having more than 90000 text books, 10000 reference books and 350 Ph.D theses. Students, research scholars and teachers use these materials in its calm, comforting and serene atmosphere. With the introduction of fully operational INFLIBNET facility (connected through dedicated lease line to INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmadabad) the utility of central library has increased many fold. Several thousands e-journals are thus made available which will immensely help research scholars, students and teachers. As far as extending this facility to other units is concerned this will act as a central hub. Connectivity has already been extended to Ranchi College and very soon all university departments and ASC will have this facility. Considering its importance its working hour has been extended upto 8pm.

University Computer Centre:

The computer centre of Ranchi university was established in the year 1976 at the instance of the University Grants Commission (UGC).  The Centre has installed  2 Mbps Leased connectivity under the UGC INFIBNET Scheme. The INFLIBNET facility is provided to the teachers, research scholars, students, and the administrative staff of the University. Computer Centre is also maintaining the University website.
