The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology is a Deemed University in Girinagar, Pune, India. It began as the Institute of Armament Studies in 1952, before moving to its current location in 1967. From the relatively narrow scope of Armament Studies alone in the Fifties, the role of the Institute was considerably enlarged by the Defence R&D Council in 1964 and further in 1981.
It is accredited by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and in the year 2000, the Institute acquired the status of a Deemed University. The Institute runs eight post graduate courses in Modeling and Simulation, Laser and Electro-optics, Chemical Technology, (High Energy Materials), Aerospace Engineering, Air Armament Engineering, Combat Vehicles, and many more short courses. A few of the courses are open for civilian students also.
Being a Teaching institute DIAT has been interacting with most of the DRDO labs. INFO and POINTS officers trained at DIAT have been posted to various DRDO labs and become interacting nodes for DIAT. Similarly many service officers trained at DIAT also join DRDO labs. Besides this there are visits from DIAT Department to various DRDO labs.
