The Institute Of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is one of the three institutes of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India. The Institute in 1960 the Ayurvedic College was converted to the College of Medical Sciences with Professor K.N. Uduppa as its founder principal and in the year 1971, the College of Medical Sciences, was upgraded as Institute of Medical Sciences.
Further postgraduate education continued with approval of DM and MCh courses in 10 Superspecialties in 1976. In 1978, the existing Faculty was bifurcated into the Faculty of Ayurveda and Faculty of Medicine to facilitate their independent growth. Today it has 33 Departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialities and eight Departments of Ayurveda.
Institute Of Medical Sciences is a residential medical institution with its own campus . Every year it admits 55 undergraduate students and 86 postgraduate students.
The campus of IMS lies at the front part of university. The campus contains the medical college, the hospital, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, a post office, a famous temple (BHU Vishwanathji), playgrounds and sporting fields. While the hospital section of the campus is typically crowded and busy, the residential part of the campus is quiet and idyllic punctuated with small parks.

The Institute imparts training for the following degree courses:
i. MBBS : Qualification : Passed Intermediate Science/Pre-Medical Course/12 year of 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks (40% in case of SC/ST candidates) in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination may also apply.
ii. BAMS : Qualification : Passed Intermediate Science/Pre-Medical Course/12 year of 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% marks (40% in case of SC/ST candidates) in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together. Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination may also apply.
iii. MD/MS : Qualification : Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by the Medical Council of India and completed one year internship training are eligible to appear in the entrance examination.
iv. MDS : Qualification : Candidates who have passed BDS course recognized by the Dental Council of India and completed one year Internship training are eligible to appear in the entrance examination.
v. MD (Ayurveda)/MS (Ayurveda) : Qualification : Candidates who have passed BAMS coursed recognized by CCIM and completed six months House Job (in the case of 5 years BAMS Course) or one year House Job (in the case of 4 ½ years BAMS Course) are eligible to appear in the entrance examination. Candidates who have passed MBBS course recognized by Medical Council of India and have completed one year internship training are also eligible to appear in the entrance examination for admission under supernumerary category. vi. D.M./M.Ch. : Qualification : Admission to DM/MCh courses are made through an all India competitive entrance examination conducted by the University. Candidates who have passed the MD/MS examination are eligible to appear in the entrance examination.
