Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management & Development Studies is one of the premier and oldest institutes in Northern Indian. It was established in 1982 primarily for offering Government recognized distance learning programmes in Management. Various programmes offered by the institute were recognized by the department of technical education, department of labour and Bureau of public enterprises of the government of Utter Pradesh. Later on all the distance learning programmes viz. PGDBA, PGDMM and PGDPM were granted permanent approval by AICTE, Ministry of Human Resources Development, and Government of India. The institute is one amongst the approved institute for the defense personnel to undertake management courses. From 1993 the institute started offering three one year regular programmes viz. PGDMSM, PGDIRPM and PGDAPR. These programmes are recognized by and affiliated to board of technical education, Utter Pradesh. The institute started its full- time MBA degree programme (AICTE approved) from the session 1998-99. The institute is affiliated to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Faizabad for this programme.

The institute has a close association and interaction with similar educational institutes and industrial houses of the country and shares a partnership with IGNOU for offering management programmes in hi-tech environment under Project MEIDS (Management education through integrated delivery systems.) for this purpose, the institute will hook on to IGNOU through INDONET/Internet. The system has a facility of having one way video and two way audio conferencing system, through which the student get an opportunity to interact with the topnotch management experts of the country. The institute has its own spacious campus of 1.4 acres in a calm and quit environment on kursi Road (Near Guramba Police Station) having all the moderate infrastructure and facilities. The institute is equipped with latest technology including internet connection, reception site of SINET channel and all modern audio and video teaching tools. The SINET channel receives all the programmes of the AIMA (All India Management Association) and IGNOU. The institute has Nodal Centers at Allahabad, Bhilai, Bhopal, Bokaro, Cuttack, Delhi, Dehradun, Durgapur, Jabalpur, Kanpur, Ujjain and Varanasi to provide the facility of regular counseling for the student of the distance learning programmes.
