National Institute of Technology, Srinagar (NIT-Srinagar) is situated at famous city of lakes in Srinagar, which is the capital of the northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir. It was established in 1960 and has been one of the eighteenth Regional Engineering Colleges sponsored by the Govt. of India during the 2nd plan. It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established in India during the first Five Year Plan.  The Institute acquired the status of National Institute of Technology with deemed to be University status during August, 2003 and attained full autonomy in its Academics.

National Institute of Technology Srinagar is one of the premier Educational Institutes in the Northern Regions of the country. It forms a part of the league along with other NITs in India.  The Institute id situated at the the banks of world famous Dal Lake, with the world famous Hazratbal Shrine on other side of the institute campus. N.I.T Srinagar is a residential Institute and accommodation  in Hostel. There are four boys and one girls hostel which swallops 1152 boys and 100 girls.  Besides running the B-Tech Programmes the institute also offers M-Tech in many streams and also  large number of students  registered for M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes.

The Institute has won recognition as an important National Institute in the field of Technical Education and has been playing a role in the development of the Kashmir region. The institute has produced more than 8000 graduates who are well placed in industry, government departments and institutes both in India and abroad. Apart from imparting professional education at the graduate and postgraduate levels, the Institute has been giving expertise to governments, semi-government and private organizations through testing and consultancy services.

Location:

The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is located on the western bank of the Dal Lake near the Hazratbal Shrine in the northern region of the Srinagar city. It is 8 km from the Tourist Reception Centre from where transport facilities are available to the city. The city of Srinagar is connected to the rest of the country by the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-1A) The nearest railway station from where trains to other parts of India are available is at Udhampur (Jammu region), about 250 km from Srinagar. The Srinagar airport is 20 km from the institute and has daily flights to Jammu and Delhi.

Departments:

NIT Srinagar has eight Engineering departments and four Applied Science departments.

i. Under Graduate (B.Tech): The institute imparts four years (eight semesters) engineering programme at undergraduate level and two years programme at graduate level. The courses offered at UG level are:

    * B.Tech; Electrical engineering
    * B.Tech; Electronics and communication engineering
    * B.Tech; Information technology engineering

ii. Post Graduate (M.Tech)

    * M.Tech; Communication and information technology (ECE)
    * M.Tech; Mechanical system design (Mechanical engineering)
    * M.Tech; Structural engineering (Civil engineering)
    * M.Tech; Water Resources Management (Civil engineering)

Approval for a number of U.G and P.G programmes are awaited from the MHRD.

iii. Ph.D Programme : The institute is an established center of doctoral work in engineering and science.

Admission procedure:

Admission into the NIT Srinagar in the graduate courses can be taken by qualifying in an entrance examination, known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).The exam consists of three sections on Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and is one of the most competitive examinations in the country, with lakhs of students competing for the privilege of a few hundred seats. Post Graduate students are admitted to the program through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institute of Technologies and the Indian Institute of Science. Graduate students are required to complete a minimum number of courses in addition to a thesis or dissertation that entails independent research under the guidance of faculty.
