National Institute of Technology , Trichy The National Institute of Technology at Tiruchirappalli (NITT), formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli (RECT) is a central government owned technology university located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1964 to cater to the needs of heavy industries set up under the guidance of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, NITT is one of the 20 National Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India.

The college has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. The institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Government of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology.

Admissions:

Admissions to undergraduate courses at NITT is competitive and is through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE), while admission to graduate programs requires competitive scores in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and National Institute of Technology MCA Common Entrance Test (NIMCET).

For undergraduate admissions, 50% of the seats are reserved for students from Tamil Nadu, while the rest are open to students from all over India. NITT follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
