Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (SVNIT Surat) is one of the 20 National Institutes of Technology established in India in June 1961. It is named after India's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This institute was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology as per the NIT Act . From the academic session 1978-79, the college switched over to the four year Degree programmes. In the year 1983-84, an under Graduate Course in Electronics Engineering had been introduced with an intake of 60 students. From the year 1988-89, two additional courses viz. Production Engineering and Computer Engineering were introduced with the approved intake of 30 students in each. From the year 1995-96 a degree course in Chemical Engineering had been introduced with an intake of 30 students which was later increased to 60 students from the year 1996-97.

The college has a campus of over 1 km² (256 acre) of land on the Surat-Dumas Highway, in the city of Surat, Gujarat in the area known as Ichchhanath, about 13 km from the Surat Railway Station. It was earlier called Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology (SVRCET). This institute offers seven undergraduate courses of Bachelor of Technology B.Tech in various disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Electronics, Chemical and Computers . It also offers postgraduate courses M.Tech. in Environmental engineering, Structural engineering, Water-resources engineering, Turbo Machines, Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering. as well as Doctoral programs Ph.D. Admissions to the undergraduate course is competitive through the AIEEE, while the admission to the post-graduate programs requires competitive score in GATE.

The institute has in all eleven hostels, nine male and two female, accommodating a total of over 3000 students. The sanctioned intake of B.Tech(including Integrated M.Sc.) students is currently 702 as of the academic year 2009. Fifty percent of the seats are filled up from Gujarat State and the fifty percent of the seats are reserved for the students from other states with a fixed quota for every state. However, according to the Corrigendum issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on June 13, 2008, it was announced that the state quota's were removed and those 50% of seats were to be filled on All India merit basis. In addition to domestic students, twenty foreign students are also admitted under the scheme of the Central Government.

The institute, which presently holds the status of a Deemed University, started with just three undergraduate degree courses in engineering- Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

The college has six departments for six main engineering disciplines, namely, Electronics engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer engineering, Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering and Civil engineering. Apart from these, it also has a Department of Applied Physics, Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Applied Mathematics & Humanities and Applied Mechanics. The departments of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have been rated 'A' by the National Board of Accreditation.

Admission:

Under Graduate Courses:


Admissions to various under graduate programmes’ of the institute are done on the basis of the scores achieved by candidates in the All India Engineering/Pharmacy/Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE) that is held every year by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Post-Graduate Admissions: Admission notification will be given on All-India basis. For admission to PG Programmes, the candidates must have at least 60 percent marks or an equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average in the B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent examination (55 percent for SC/ST category) in the respective branch of Engineering. For the PG Programme in Town and Regional Planning offered by the Civil Engineering Department, the candidates with B.E./B.Tech. degree in Civil Engineering or Bachelors degree in Architecture securing at least 60 percent of the marks are eligible for admission. For the PG Programmes in Mechanical Engineering, the candidates with B.E./B.Tech in Production/Production & Industrial Engineering are also eligible for admission.
