B. R. Ambedkar Bihar University or simply Bihar University is a public university located in the north prime of Bihar state in the city of Muzaffarpur in India. Established in the year 1960 - The Bihar State Universities Act 1960 bifurcated the existing University of Bihar into three separate Universities, namely; (1) Bihar University, Muzaffarpur (2) Ranchi University, Ranchi (3) Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur.
Central Library was established in the year 1953, after the establishment of University in 1952. In 1972 the present building of the Central Library was constructed with aid of UGC funds. The total holdings of the Library is 1,15,350 with Rare Books, Theses, Reports, Back Volumes of Journals (both Indian and Foreign). The library catering the needs of all the Post Graduate Departments and Local Colleges.
This university has 37 constituent colleges. Distance education courses are also offered. The university is a premier institution of teaching and learning in the city and offers various full-time and part-time courses ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate and research level. Besides contemporary courses, vocational courses are also offered by the university. Professional courses conducted by the university include courses like Computer Application, Business Administration, Industrial Microbiology, Industrial Fish and Fisheries, Industrial Chemistry, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library Sciences, Clinical Psychology, and Yogic Studies. Department of Distance Education conducts correspondence courses for those who have hitherto been unable to get regular higher education.
