The Bihar Government has established on August 15th, 2006 came into being Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) at Patna under the able guidance of its Vice - Chancellor, Prof. A. Lakshminath, former Dean and Registrar, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad.
The Chief Justice of Patna High Court is the ex-officio Chancellor of the university. Presently, the position is held by chief justice Hon`ble Justice Miss Rekha Manharlal Doshit. Apart from offering graduate and post-graduate research disciplines in Law, the university has also started a diploma course of Post Graduate Level in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) including International Commercial Arbitration, in collaboration with The Construction Council of India. This is a unique initiative in the field of Legal Education in India. The first batch of students would be graduating in the year 2011.

The University is situated at the Meethapur area (spread over a sprawling campus of nearly 20 acres (81,000 m2)) of Patna between the Patna Junction Railway Station (15 mins. by feet) and Bus Stand (10 mins. by feet), where Building construction work is nearing completion. The plot has been allotted by the Government.
