Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University was set up in the historic city of Lucknow by the U.P. Act No.28 of 2005 and came into being on 4th of January 2006 to meet up the new challenges in legal fields and to strengthen the vision that was given by the establishment first National Law School of the country. Originally incorporated as 'Dr.Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law Institute, Uttar Pradesh' word 'Institute' was substituted by the 'University' later, vide an amendment in the Act in November'2006.This was done to give a comprehensive national character to the Institute on lines with the other premier National Law Universities of the Country.

The Law University is fully funded by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The state of the art campus is developed in 40 acres (160,000 m2) of land in the heart of the city of Lucknow. The University started its academic session from 17 August 2006 with 80 students and 7 faculty members.

Courses offered:

The University currently offers B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) (Five years integrated programme), LL.M. (Two years programme), Ph.D. and such other programme in accordance to such syllabus for each of the above courses as approved by the Executive Council on the recommendation of the Academic Council. The number of seats in each course shall be such as may be fixed from time to time by the Academic Council on the recommendation of the Director.

Eligibility:

(1) A candidate is not eligible for the degree of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) unless he/she has:
    (a) Passed, not less than five years previously, the Intermediate/Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) or an equivalent Examination from a University/recognized Board, and
    (b) Has undergone a regular course of study in the University for a period of five academic years.
(2) No candidate shall be eligible for the degree of LL.M. unless he has:
    (a) Passed, not less than two years previously, B.A. LL.B. (Hons.)/B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) degree of this University or LL.B. five years or LL.B. three years degree of a recognized University; and
    (b) Has undergone a regular course of study in the University for a period of two academic years.

Facilities:

The university guarantees the state of the art facilities in Law studies as compared to other Law universities of the nation. It has excellent infrastructural facilities such as the state-of-the-art Dr.Madhu Limaye Central Library which already has more than 12000 books apart from subscription to more than 50 journals and magazines of national and international repute.The library also has a 60 system computer and internet facility which provides access to many online journals and database like lexis-nexis, Westlaw, , SCC Online, Manupatra etc. The university is fully centralized air conditioned. Campus wide networking/internet facility through Wi-Fi system enables the students & faculty to have unlimited access to the vistas of knowledge. The university also has a state of the art gymnasium,swimming pool, basketball court, indoor badminton court with wooden flooring and other recreation facilities. The classrooms also have a projection screen. The university boasts of a hi-tech tele-conferencing facility . An auditorium, with a seating capacity of 3500 people is being constructed.
