New Delhi: The executive council meeting of Delhi University (DU) will once again debate on Wednesday a proposal to introduce a biometric attendance system for teachers.

The vice-chancellor (V-C) had to adjourn the last executive council meeting as the teachers’ representatives marched to the well of the house demanding a priority-based debate on the issue. Sources said Wednesday’s meeting may meet a similar fate. The new attendance system is listed at number five and the teachers’ representatives want it to be placed at number one.

‘‘We will dicuss the proposal only if it is taken up before anything else. But if, like in the past, the V-C is not even wiling to hear the elected members then we will have no other option but to oppose it,” an EC member said.

On why the teachers are opposing the proposed system, EC member Rajib Ray said: ‘‘The teachers are not against accountability, but it should be introduced at all levels. Years have passed with teachers being denied promotions, have they stopped teaching? Where is the accountability of the administration on these issues?”
