Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute located in Ranchi, Jharkhand in India. The Birla Institute of Technology was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, by the Philanthropist - Industrialist Mr. B M Birla. During initial years, Institute was affiliated to Patna University till 1960 and then to Ranchi University. BIT was declared a Deemed University in 1986 vide Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 under notification No. F. 9-2/83-U.3 of August 28, 1986. BIT functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a high power Board of Governors, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the U.G.C., the State Government, The Chancellor, the AICTE, The Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty. Shri G.P. Birla is the Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Governor of the state of Jharkhand is the Chancellor of the Institute. The Technical Council decides the academic policy of the Institute.

Central Facilities:
i. Central Computer Aided Design Laboratory (CAD-LAB) : The CAD Laboratory is a central facility of the institute where all users - undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars and faculty members - can work with sophisticated design and analysis software.
ii. Central Computing Facilities (CCF) : The Central Computing Facility (CCF) forms an extremely important component of the Institute’s infrastructure, providing a wide spectrum of services to the students as well as faculty and staff involved in research and other academic activities.
iii. Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) : The Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) of the Institute was established in 2006 under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), funded by the World Bank and Government of Jharkhand, with an objective to provide sophisticated instrumental facilities for advanced research to faculty and students of the Institute, as well as Institutions in the State of Jharkhand.
iv. Central Library : The Central Library of the Institute, established in 1955, has a collection of the Central Library comprises hybrid (print & electronic) resources in the fields of science and technology. The collection includes 10130 online journals, 100 print journals, 112470 books, 2503 CDs, 58 audiocassettes and 4079 project reports.
Admission:
Under Graduate Courses: a) The maximum age limit for admission to undergraduate programmes is 21 years (26 years for SC/ST candidates) as on 1st Oct 2009.
b) Candidates for the various programmes must have studied and passed certain required subjects / combinations of subjects in Class 12 as given below against each programme. Candidates must have passed in ALL subjects in which they have appeared in Class 12 (excluding optional subjects) with certain minimum marks in average for each programme as given below. Marks in Class 12 will be computed as average of best 5 subjects including English and other required subjects / combinations of subjects for a given programme. The minimum cut-off for a given programme may vary from Centre to Centre where such programme is offered.
