MACS-Agharkar Research Institute

Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) is an autonomous, grant-in-aid research institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Goverment of India. It was established in 1946 by the Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of Science as MACS Research Institute and renamed as ARI in 1992 in honour and memory of its founder Director, late Professor S.P. Agharkar.

It comprises Institute's research areas, publications, patents, scientific staff, facilities, services, and opportunities for research.

The Agharkar Research Institute Library is one of the important science reference libraries in city of Pune, especially for the Biological Sciences. The Library is primarily meant for the Institute's scientists and research students. However, it is frequently consulted and used by many research workers, teaching staff and students of various other institutes and colleges.

The strength of the Library lies in its collection of books and periodicals of specialised nature. The Library collection spans over the subjects like - Biometry, Nutrition, Botany, Medicinal Plants, Chemistry, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Geology, Palaeontology, Microbiology, Mycology, Zoology, Developmental Biology and so on. There are several periodicals available in the Library from its first volume. All the volumes of 'Biological Abstracts' are available in the library in printed format.

The Institute desires to enrol research fellows for research leading to Ph.D. degree in the following areas:

Botany (Mycology, Taxonomy, Plant biotechnology, Plant tissue culture, Plant molecular biology, Pharmacology & Pharmacognosy, Genetics & Plant breeding), Zoology (Developmental biology, molecular biology), Microbiology (bioremediation, anaerobic microbiology, nanobiotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, Environmental Microbiology), Chemistry (Photochemistry, Organic chemistry), Biometry & Nutrition (Nutritional biochemistry, Community nutrition, Experimental nutrition) Geology (Paleontology, stratigraphy), Virology.

The current research activities encompass biological sciences and focus on three broad areas :

1. Division Of Animal Sciences:

The Division of Animal Sciences consists of four research groups working on human nutrition and health, animal developmental biology, insect pheromones and paleontology with special reference to biostratigraphy and palaeoecology.

  • Human Nutrition And Health
  • Developmental Biology
  • Insect Pheromones
  • Paleontology

2. Division Of Microbial Sciences:

The Microbial Sciences Division is actively engaged in developing microbial processes for removal of metals, dyes and pesticides from wastes and production of vitamins enzymes, amino acids, etc., and basic studies on anaerobic bacteria and extremophiles.

  • Center for Nanobioscience (CNB)
  • Metal-microbe interactions
  • Microbial degradation of toxic chemopollutants
  • Production of Industrially Important Biochemicals
  • Enzymes of alkaliphilic and thermophilic bacteria
  • Biogas Technology

3. Division Of Plant Sciences:

The Plant Sciences Division is working on genetic improvement of soybean, wheat and grapes using conventional plant breeding approaches, application of molecular biology techniques for genetic diversity assessment and marker-aided selection strategies; plant biodiversity conservation particularly for medico-botanical and endangered rare species, pharmacognostic evaluation of medicinal plants, and palaeobiodiversity through palaeobotanical collection, lichen, fungal and mushroom taxonomy.

  • Soybean
  • Wheat
  • Grapes
  • Plant Biodiversity
  • Medico-Botanical

The ARI is also a main research centre under three All India Co-ordinated Research Projects of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) : Wheat breeding, Soybean breeding and Grape breeding. The ARI has an agricultural farm located at Hol, near Baramati, about 80 kms from Pune, for experiments on crop plants and for multiplication of seed of improved varieties. A number of research schemes , funded by DST, CSIR, ICAR, ICMR, DBT and DNES are being operated.
