National Institute of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) , an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act was established in 1967 as Regional Engineering College, Silchar. In year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College.
In Infrastructure parameter , NIT silchar comes in 2nd place among all NITs. And comes behind IIT-B and IIT-D in overall ranking in India according to DQ ratings. The institute has undergone rapid and radical transformation in its Infrastructure and Academic facilities during the last 4 years since its upgradation to NIT.
NIT Silchar is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres {2.43 km2} of land on the outskirts of Silchar city amid breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks. NITs is a fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys' and two for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 2000 and that of the girls' hostels is 250. Room allotment is done in such a way that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other promoting national integration. High speed internet connection is available in all the hostels 24 hours a day throughout the week. A 500 bedded state-of-the-art new Men's hostel is under construction and is to be fully functional from next year onwards.
The Institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 kilometers from the southern outskirts of Silchar city. Buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis can be hired from the city centre to reach the institute. Silchar is situated at 92.52 degrees East longitude and 24.6 degrees North latitude and at a height of 114.69 meters above sea level. This place is the headquarters of the Cachar district in Assam and is linked to the rest of the country by road, rail and air.
