The National Institute of Technology Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology, created by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India on January 28, 2004. Its origin can be traced way back to 1886 with establishment of a Survey Training School and subsequent elevation to Bihar School of Engineering, Patna in 1900. Graduate level curriculum was introduced in 1924. It was renamed as Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1932.

In 2004, the college was upgraded to the status of National Institute of Technology. NIT Patna is soon to be given the status of Deemed University. For the time being, NIT Patna is attached to the Patna University for the purpose of examinations and award of degree.

NIT Patna presently offers degree courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics & Tele Communications Engineering, Architecture and Bachelor of Computer Applications. The total intake of students in undergraduate courses is 210. NIT Patna also offers M.Sc. Engg. courses in various branches of engineering. Besides the above programs, NIT Patna also offers MBA and MCA programs.
