  JHARKHAND BOARD You are here

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) is located in Bangalore, and is a multidisciplinary Institute for patient care and academic pursuit in the frontier area of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. It has been recognised by the Government of India as a medical 'institute of national importance'. The Lunatic Asylum which came into being in the latter part of the 19th Century was renamed as Mental Hospital in 1925 by the erstwhile Government of Mysore. This hospital and All India Institute of Mental Health established in 1954 by Government of India were amalgamated on 27th December 1974, and thus was formed the autonomous National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS). On November 14, 1994, NIMHANS has been declared a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission, with academic autonomy.

The functioning of the Institute is under the direction of the NIMHANS society with the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare as the President. The Principal organ of management is the Board of Management. The other statutory bodies are Finance Committee, Academic Committee, Ethics Committee, Building and Works Committee and Rehabilitation Committee.

The Institute is funded by the Government of India. Several national and international agencies like ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), DST (Department of Science and Technology (India)), UGC, CSIR, WHO, Oxfam, Alcoholics Anonymous, Desperate United UNICEF are other charities resources.
