National Institute Of Technology Silchar (formerly NIT Silchar & Regional Engineering College, Silchar) is situated on the banks of river Barak at Silchar in the state of Assam. NIT Silchar an Institute of National Importance was established in 1967 under the NIT Act. Institute campus spread over 600 acres of land & It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks. In year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College.

NIT Silchar comes in 2nd place among all NITs. And comes behind IIT-B and IIT-D in overall ranking in India according to DQ ratings. The institute has undergone rapid and radical transformation in its Infrastructure and Academic facilities during the last 4 years since its upgradation to NIT.

NITS is a fully residential institution with eight hostels for boys' and two for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 2000 and that of the girls' hostels is 250. Room allotment is done in such a way that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other promoting national integration. High speed internet connection is available in all the hostels 24 hours a day on weekends and from 6pm-8am on weekdays. The reason for these timings are kept a secret by the administration.

Location:

The Institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 kilometers from the southern outskirts of Silchar city. Buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis can be hired from the city centre to reach the institute. Silchar is situated at 92.52 degrees East longitude and 24.6 degrees North latitude and at a height of 114.69 meters above sea level. This place is the headquarters of the Cachar district in Assam and is linked to the rest of the country by road, rail and air.

Admissions:

1. B.Tech : The students who have passed their qualifying examination from the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Mizoram have been selected according to their performance in the AIEEE conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi. This institute acts as a Counselling Centre for the entire Northeastern region including the state of Sikkim.

2. M.Tech : The advertisement for M.Tech programme was released in leading national newspapers, local dailies and in the website of the institute. Admissions were offered on the basis of marks in the qualifying examination (B.E./B.Tech.), performance in interview and the GATE score. GATE qualified candidates are eligible for institutional financial assistance. Candidates are required to have a minimum of 60 per cent of marks or its equivalent in Bachelor of Engineering/ Technology degree.
