AHMEDABAD: There was a collective sigh of relief as the first of the Indian Institutes of Management to go for summer placements saw the entire batch of 2009-11, which was also the biggest, placed for the summers within a record four days. This would have seemed impossible a couple of months ago under the cloud of global financial meltdown.

Last year the summer placements stretched on for six days and the finals for nine days at IIM-Ahmedabad.

A majority of the students — 44 per cent of 312 students — picked finance jobs in investment banking, private equity, corporate banking and treasury. Eighteen per cent of students opted for marketing roles. Consulting and general management were the next two preferred domains followed by IT. Investment banks took 77 students from IIM-A for summers, as compared to 35 last year. Two students opted out of placements.

Royal Bank of Scotland picked 12 students, highest any recruiter had taken during the process for Singapore, London and Hong Kong, followed by Tata Administrative Services at 10 acceptances. The process comprised two slots, slot 0 and slot 1, both spread over 2 days. On slot 0, 166 students were placed and 144 were placed on slot 1.
